On June 28, Ukraine marks one of its key national holidays — Constitution Day. This year, we celebrate the 29th anniversary of the adoption of the Fundamental Law, which established the foundations of democratic order, defined the structure of the state and its authorities, and guaranteed human rights and freedoms.

The adoption of the Constitution by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on June 28, 1996, became a defining step in the consolidation of Ukrainian statehood, the formation of a legal system, and the development of civil society. This act carries exceptional political and legal significance, and its content meets the highest international standards, as confirmed by the Venice Commission.

Today, amid Russia’s full-scale war of aggression, the principles enshrined in the Constitution have acquired even deeper meaning. They not only define the functioning of the state, but also remind us that human rights, dignity, freedom, and the rule of law are values that Ukrainians defend every day. By fulfilling their constitutional duty, Ukrainian defenders resist the enemy and uphold the independence and territorial integrity of the state.

The Constitution of Ukraine is more than a legal document. It is a moral compass for our nation, a symbol of our democratic choice, enshrined at the highest legal level. The Constitution defines Ukraine’s strategic course towards full membership in the European Union and NATO.

We are proud that Ukrainian constitutionalism has deep historical roots — from “Ruska Pravda” and the Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk to the current Fundamental Law. For centuries, Ukrainians have sought a just order based on freedom, law, and human dignity. These aspirations are an integral part of the European legal tradition.

This day is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to these values, express gratitude to those who defend Ukraine, and strengthen our shared belief that Ukraine will endure, win, and build a strong democratic future.
